Event planner wins: you have a vision but no idea how to execute it, limited time, or a complex event with many vendors. The planner owns the whole thing so you don’t have to hold every thread.
Event coordinator wins: you’ve done the planning (or a venue package covers it) and just need a pro to manage the timeline, cue vendors, and handle problems on the day so you can actually be present.
The titles overlap and get used loosely, so scope the deliverables, not the label. “Day-of coordination” from a planner and a standalone coordinator can be the same service — confirm exactly what’s included.
What it means for your budget
If you’re overwhelmed and starting cold, pay for a full event planner; the coordination is usually baked in. If your plan is set and you only need the day handled, a coordinator (often offered as day-of coordination) covers it for less.
