The short answer
Most independent business coaches charge $150–$500 per session, and a typical small-business engagement lands around $250 per session. Sessions usually run 60–90 minutes, and most coaches sell them in monthly packages of two to four.
| Tier | Range | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| DIY / free resources | $0 | Books, podcasts, and free SBA mentoring programs. Slower, but real. |
| Newer coaches / group programs | $75–$150 | Coaches building a track record, or group calls where you share airtime. |
| Independent professional | $150–$500 | One-on-one sessions, a structured framework, accountability between calls. |
| Premium / former-executive coaches | $500+ | Coaches with an operating record at scale, often sold as $2,000+ monthly retainers. |
What actually moves the price
Coaching is unregulated. Anyone can print “business coach” on a card tomorrow — no license, no required training, no oversight body. That is the single biggest reason quotes vary this much: the title carries no floor. Certifications exist, but none are mandatory, so the price signal you can actually trust is the coach’s own business history and client references, not the label.
Their track record, not their marketing. A coach who has built and run a profitable business charges more than one who has only coached. You are paying for pattern recognition — someone who has seen your cash-flow problem forty times before. Ask what they ran, for how long, and what happened to it.
Format and commitment. One-off sessions cost the most per hour. Three- and six-month packages bring the per-session rate down but raise the total — a $250 session becomes a $3,000 commitment fast. Group coaching is the budget path, and it works fine for general strategy; it works poorly when your problem is specific to your books or your market.

Before you hire
Read the business coach hiring guide for the vetting questions that expose a weak coach in one call, and set your total budget before the first conversation — our guide to setting a project budget keeps a per-session price from quietly becoming a five-figure year. If your problems are more executive than operational, compare rates in the executive coach cost guide before you commit.
