What actually moves the price
Coaching is unregulated. Anyone can call themselves a career coach — no license, no required training, no oversight body. That’s the single biggest reason quotes vary this much: the title carries no floor. The price signal you can actually trust is the coach’s own background and client outcomes, not a certificate. Coaching versus document production. Some “career coaches” mostly rewrite résumés and LinkedIn profiles at a flat rate. That’s a legitimate service, but it’s not the same as strategy and accountability, and it shouldn’t cost the same. Be clear which you’re buying — a document is a deliverable, coaching is a relationship.
Specialization. A generalist who helps with any job search costs less than someone who places people specifically in your industry or at your level. If your situation is niche — a career pivot, an executive search, a regulated field — the specialist’s higher rate often reflects contacts and pattern recognition you can’t get generically.
