The short answer
Independent executive coaches charge $200–$600 per session, with a typical engagement around $350 per session. Sessions usually run 60–90 minutes and are almost always sold as multi-month packages — executive coaching is a sustained relationship, not a single conversation.
| Tier | Range | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Peer / mentor | $0–$150 | A trusted advisor or free mentorship program. Real, if the fit is right. |
| Newer coaches | $150–$250 | Coaches building a senior client base, often with a structured framework. |
| Independent professional | $250–$500 | One-on-one work with a leader, 360 feedback, accountability, a real method. |
| Premium / former-executive | $500–$800+ | Coaches with C-suite operating records, sold as high monthly retainers. |
What actually moves the price
Coaching is unregulated. No license or required training gates the title, so the price floor is set by the coach’s own credibility, not any credential. At the executive level that credibility usually means either a serious operating record or a long, referenceable coaching history. Ask what they ran or whom they’ve coached, and check it — the label alone tells you nothing.
Operating record versus theory. The premium tier is largely people who have actually held senior roles and can pattern-match your problem to forty they’ve seen. A coach who has only ever coached can still be excellent, but they charge less because they’re selling method rather than lived experience. Decide which you need before paying for the more expensive kind.
Who’s paying and why. Executive coaching is often company-funded, which quietly inflates rates — the buyer isn’t spending their own money. If you’re paying personally, you have more leverage on price and package length than a corporate HR budget does. Set your total commitment before the first call, because a $350 session becomes a five-figure engagement quickly.
