The short answer

See a therapist if you’re dealing with a mental health condition — depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, an eating disorder, substance issues, or anything affecting your ability to function. Therapists are licensed clinicians who diagnose and treat mental illness. A life coach is not, cannot, and should not.

Work with a life coach when you’re mentally well but stuck on goals, habits, transitions, or motivation — and you want a structured, forward-looking partner to help you move. Coaching is about growth from a stable baseline, not treatment.

This distinction isn’t a marketing nuance. It’s a matter of safety and, in many places, law.

The real differences

Life coach Therapist
Licensed No standard license required State-licensed clinician
Treats mental illness No — and shouldn’t Yes — trained and authorized
Focus Goals, habits, future action Healing, diagnosis, mental health
Time orientation Where you’re going Often includes the past
Regulation Largely unregulated Regulated, ethics-bound
Insurance Rarely covered Often covered

Where each one wins

Therapist wins: you’re struggling to function, feeling persistently hopeless, managing a diagnosed condition, processing trauma or grief, or in any kind of crisis. This is clinical work. If you’re in immediate danger, contact emergency services or a crisis line right now — not a coach.

Life coach wins: you’re basically okay but want accountability and structure — a career pivot, a fitness habit, launching something, breaking a rut. A good coach knows their limits and will refer you to a licensed professional the moment something clinical surfaces.

A responsible coach never diagnoses, never treats mental illness, and hands off when they should. If a coach claims to treat anxiety or depression, walk away.

What it means for you

If there’s any real doubt, start with a licensed professional — a therapist or your doctor can assess and, if coaching is a fit, say so. When you’re well and the goal is momentum, a life coach can genuinely help. Before you hire one, read how to hire a coach safely so you know the questions that separate the real ones from the rest.
