What actually moves the price
Manual versus automated. Manual testing is cheaper per hour and catches plenty, but it has to be redone every release. Automated testing costs more upfront because someone writes code that tests your code, but it then runs free forever and catches regressions the moment they appear. For anything you’ll ship repeatedly, automation earns its higher rate.
Bug reports you can use. A weak tester says “it’s broken.” A good one gives you exact steps to reproduce, what they expected, what happened, and where — a report a developer can act on without a meeting. That clarity is most of the value, and it’s why the middle tier is worth more than the bottom.
Testing your own work is a blind spot. The reason QA exists as a separate role is that the person who built something can’t see its gaps — they test the way they built it. An outside tester approaches it the way a confused customer will. Skipping this doesn’t save money; it moves the cost to your support inbox and your reputation.
