The short answer

A Shopify store built by an independent developer runs $1,000–$12,000, with a typical small-to-mid project around $4,500. Shopify does a lot out of the box, so the price is really about how far past the defaults you go — theme customization, custom features, and app integrations.

Tier Range What you get
DIY / theme $0–$400 A Shopify theme you set up yourself. Genuinely workable for many stores.
Marketplace gig $400–$1,000 Theme setup and product entry. Minimal customization.
Independent professional $1,000–$6,000 Customized theme, apps configured, checkout tuned, launch support.
Senior / custom $6,000–$15,000+ Custom theme code, headless builds, complex catalogs, integrations.

What actually moves the price

How far from the theme you go. Shopify’s themes are strong, and a well-configured theme store is a legitimate, affordable outcome. Costs rise when you need behavior a theme can’t do — custom product configurators, bespoke checkout logic, or a headless front end. Know which camp you’re in before comparing quotes, because paying for custom code you don’t need is pure waste.

Apps and their monthly cost. Much of Shopify’s power comes from apps, and each one usually carries a monthly fee. A developer can wire them together, but the ongoing subscriptions are yours forever. A good developer tells you the real monthly cost of the stack they’re proposing, not just the build fee.

Catalog and migration. A ten-product store is quick. Thousands of products, variants, and a migration from another platform is a real project with its own risks around data and redirects. If you’re moving an existing store, say so — it changes the quote materially.
