LOW$1,500
TYPICAL$5,000per project
HIGH$15,000

The short answer

For a custom small-business website built by an independent developer, expect $1,500–$15,000 per project, with a typical build landing around $5,000. Where you fall in that range depends far more on scope than on who you hire.

Tier Range What you get
DIY / site builders $0–$500 A template on Squarespace or Wix. Fine for a placeholder or a one-page brochure.
Budget freelancers $500–$1,500 Template customization, minimal testing, little documentation.
Independent professional $1,500–$8,000 Custom build, responsive design, basic SEO setup, a launch checklist, handoff docs.
Agency / complex build $8,000–$15,000+ Multi-stakeholder process, custom integrations, ongoing support contracts.

What actually moves the price

Scope, ruthlessly. A five-page marketing site and a site with member logins, payments, and a booking system are different animals wearing the same word “website.” Every dynamic feature — search, user accounts, third-party integrations — adds real hours. Write down what the site must do, not what it should look like, before you ask for quotes.

Content readiness. Developers quote higher when they suspect they’ll be waiting on your copy and photos for six weeks. Arriving with finished content and a clear sitemap can shave meaningful money off a quote because it removes the developer’s biggest schedule risk.

Who maintains it after launch. A site you can update yourself (usually a CMS build) costs more upfront and less forever. A hard-coded site is cheaper today and bills you hourly every time you change a phone number. Ask which one you’re buying.
