The total money a business earns from selling its services or products over a period, before any expenses are subtracted.

Revenue is the total money your business earns from selling its services over a period, before any costs come out. It’s the same as gross income for most freelancers — the top line, the total of every invoice you collected this month, quarter, or year.

For sellers, revenue is worth tracking but easy to over-celebrate. A $200,000 revenue year can hide a thin profit margin if your costs are high or you’re leaving money on the table through underpricing. Revenue tells you how much work you’re doing; net income tells you whether it’s worth it. For buyers, this is mostly internal to the professional, but higher-revenue operations often have more capacity and systems.

Watch revenue alongside where it comes from. One client making up 70% of your revenue is a risk, not a triumph — if they leave, most of your income leaves with them. Tracking revenue by client and by month is the start of understanding your numbers.
