The short answer

A professional book cover runs $300–$2,000, with a typical indie-author project around $800. Price depends on whether you need ebook only or a full print wrap, whether the art is custom or licensed stock, and how established the designer is in your genre.

Tier Range What you get
DIY / premade $0–$150 Template or premade covers. Fast and cheap, rarely genre-perfect.
Marketplace gig $150–$400 A custom ebook cover, often stock-based, limited revisions.
Independent professional $400–$1,200 Custom concept, ebook plus print wrap, genre-aware, source files.
Senior / illustrated $1,200–$2,500+ Custom illustration or typography, series branding, premium finish.

What actually moves the price

Genre fluency, not just taste. A romance cover and a thriller cover follow different visual codes, and readers judge in a glance. The designers worth their rate know your genre’s conventions cold — that knowledge is why their covers convert, and it’s a real reason the higher tiers cost more.

Ebook versus full print wrap. An ebook needs only the front. A print book needs front, spine, and back sized to your exact page count and trim — the spine width changes with the page count, so the file can’t be finalized until the interior is. A print wrap is more work and priced above an ebook-only cover.

Custom art versus stock. Licensed stock imagery keeps costs down and works fine for many genres. Custom illustration or hand-lettering pushes the price up because it’s original work — and for a series, that bespoke look pays off across every future title.
