What actually moves the price
The edit, not just the shoot. The hourly rate covers the shoot, but a professional’s real work is the editing afterward — culling hundreds of frames, color-correcting, and delivering a clean gallery. A cheap quote that skips serious editing means you get raw-looking photos, and the true cost of “fixing it” is higher than the discount saved.
Coverage and deliverables. Hours of coverage, number of edited images, delivery speed, a second shooter, and print or licensing rights all move the number. Get these in writing — “photos delivered” means very different things at $150 and $350 an hour.
Usage rights. Personal-event photos are usually yours to share. Commercial or press use — anything promoting a business — may carry licensing terms. Confirm rights up front so you’re not paying again later. A clear freelance contract settles this cleanly.
