What actually moves the price
Coaching versus editing. A coach develops you and your project over time — structure, voice, and the discipline to keep going. An editor works on a finished draft, line by line, and is a different (often per-word or per-project) service. Paying coaching rates for what you actually need edited, or vice versa, is a common and avoidable waste.
Coaching is unregulated. No license gates the title, so credibility comes from the coach’s own writing and publishing record and their clients’ results. A coach who has actually published in your form — fiction, nonfiction, academic, business — brings relevant pattern recognition that a generalist can’t.
Genre and goal fit. Coaching a novelist, a PhD candidate, and a founder writing a business book are different jobs. Match the coach’s background to your goal; the value is specific guidance for what you’re actually trying to write, not general encouragement to write more.
